WHAT IS FLOCK

FLOCK is a powder made from a variety of fibres: it is soft, light, odourless. It is generally coloured, as it is dyed during its production process. Flock is the primary product to perform the flocking operation (velvetting), i.e. to cover an object, whether flat or three-dimensional, with textile fibres of various sizes in terms of length and diameter and make it velvety both to the touch and to the eye.

The primary classification of Flock is the distinction between a cut Flock and a milled Flock.
CUT FLOCK:
The length of the fibres is uniform and precise, and can vary from 0.3 mm to a maximum of 10.0 mm. Cut flock is obtained from fibres in the form of Tow: continuous, parallel bundles of fibres.

MILLED FLOCK: The length of the fibres is irregular. Depending on the milling grid used, there are short blends (0.2–0.4 mm.) medium blends (0.5–0.8 mm.) long blends (over 0.9 mm.) It is obtained from discontinuous fibre pieces, which are only suitable for milling and not for cutting.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FLOCK

RAYON FLOCK: Artificial fibre with a wide range of deniers (fibre coarseness). Flock made from viscose fibres is used in a variety of applications. Surfaces flocked with viscose can be glossy and/or matt, they are soft like suede or compact like velvet. The abrasion resistance is more or less good, depending on the type of flock.

  • MILLED RAYON FLOCK: It is produced from discontinuous pieces of viscose rayon yarn and therefore suitable for milling, but not for cutting. The flocked surfaces can have a more or less soft feel with generally acceptable abrasion resistance.
  • VISCOSE RAYON FLOCK: It is produced from tow (bundle of continuous, parallel fibres) of viscose rayon. It is said of viscose rayon that it is an artificial (non-synthetic) fibre as it is obtained from cellulose, which in turn is obtained from wood and is therefore a biodegradable fibre.

NYLON FLOCK: A widely used synthetic fibre appreciated for its strength qualities. Available in various deniers (fibre coarseness), in matt or glossy versions, super shiny, and solution-dyed. There are many applications for the flock obtained from this fibre. Surfaces flocked with nylon have a very compact, velvet-like feel, with excellent resistance to abrasion, denting and moisture. Surfaces flocked with nylon flock are flexible, lightweight and easy to dry.

COTTON FLOCK: A natural, biodegradable fibre with good single-count tenacity. Using a cotton flock results in a flock with a sufficiently soft feel and a rather matt surface, which is fairly resistant to abrasion. It is produced from fabric and knitted scraps of pure cotton. The diameter of this fibre is more or less the same, regardless of where it is produced. Since the count (fibre coarseness) is unique, the type of flock that can be obtained from it is also unique. There can only be a difference in the milling length.

POLYESTER FLOCK: Synthetic fibre of excellent tenacity with high resistance to heat, moisture and wear. Available in different deniers (fibre coarseness). Very interesting are the low deniers (microfibres from 0.1 to 0.5 Dtex), from which a very light flock is obtained, which allows the creation of surfaces completely similar to natural leathers. Surfaces flocked with polyester flock have characteristics similar to those of nylon.
